Can an implant be done by a general dentist or it has to be a periodontist?
Q. My general dentist has reasonable prices for a tooth implant and a periodontist or a prosthodontist are way to expensive.
A. It used to be the norm that only specialists performed implants, but more and more general dentists are getting in on the act too. They just have to take the courses and do hands on study to be qualified for it.
What you want to consider is whether or not the general dentist is placing a "mini-implant" in stead of a regular one. This is not always the best course of treatment and needs to be considered when deciding who you want to treat you.
Talk to both dentists and see which one you feel the most comfortable with. Do not base such an important and life long decision on price, and remember that you get what you pay for. Cheaper is not always better. (neither is more expensive--it works both ways)

Is it illegal for a general dentist to provide orthodontia services?
Q. I was receiving orthodontia services from an orthodontist at my dentist's office. The orthodontist left the practice over 2 years ago and the general dentist took over my orthodontia care. I have had little change in my teeth in this time. I feel that my dentist is not qualified to render such services. Recently I learned that my dentist is not a certified orthodontist.... Is this legal?
A. In the US, yes it is legal for a general dentist to perform any dental procedure he feels comfortable doing, though he will be held to the same standard as the specialist should something go wrong. Granted he's probably not as good as an orthodontist, but a lot of general dentists may be very good at ortho. depends.
Is it more cost effective to have a general dentist -vs- oral surgeon to do a simple wisdom teeth extraction?
Q. My daughter needs her wisdom teeth pulled and they aren't impacted or "complicated". Is it more "cost effective" to have a general dentist do the procedure than an oral surgeon? Isn't an oral surgeon considered a "specialist" and therefore more expensive?
A. Just a heads up,you may not want them to give you the drug called Versed
( Midazolam )
In fact, many people who use Versed for " IV Sedation,Conscious Sedation" during a procedure are awake for the entire procedure but remember nothing, often believing they were "out" the whole time.
Versed (Midazolam) is an amnestic. It is commonly administered in combination with anesthesia before and during surgery. It is also commonly used for minor procedures like colonoscopies dental procedures like extractions, conscience sedation, twilight sleep, so that patients won't remember pain and discomfort.HOWEVER THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT THOSE SENSATIONS WILL NOT BE EXPERIENCED!!!!Forgetting does no mean it did not happen!! Amnesia does NOT take place for some patients.
IT'S NOT MY INTENTION FOR YOU TO NOT GET THE PROCEDURE DONE, JUST INFORMING YOU THAT YOU MAY WANT IT DONE WITH ANOTHER DRUG!!!!!
Here is a note from a Dentist about Versed
I've used Versed 1000+ times during oral surgery procedures and I've never had a complaint. It's a miracle drug because it is safe and it causes you to not remember an unpleasant experience. My answer to him is isn't it better to have not experienced the pain than to have forgot it. No wonder you have had no complaints you gave them amnesia!!
