How early do you take your child to the dentist?

Q. What's the appropriate age to take your child to the dentist? And how often? Is a yearly checkup enough?
Thanks.

A. I recommend that the child come see me as soon as he has four teeth. This visit is mainly to help mom understand how to take care of baby's teeth and catch any cavities when they are small.

I see mainly children in my practice and you would not believe how many teeth I have to extract from 2 and 3 year olds simply because nobody ever taught mom how to take care of her baby's teeth. By the time they come to my office at 2 or 3 years old it is often too late for me to save the teeth. Honestly, it makes me sad and a llittle sick every time I have to do that, but it's what has to be done.

What type of dentist should one go to if he wants to be out during dental surgery.?
Q. When I was a child my dentist pulled my tooth when it wasn't numb, for some strange reason I think thats going to happen again. So, now I would just rather be completely out.

A. An oral surgeon is trained, and has (should) an office equipped for using anesthesia. Let the dentist know that you want to be asleep. If you don't have one in mind, ask family, friends or coworkers for a recommendation. It is not a good idea to just choose a name out of the phone book. It will be ok!

How do you get rid of orange stain on teeth?
Q. Just took child to dentist. They said there was an over active build up of orange plack called orange stain. What causes this and how can you make it go away or lessen the amount of plack that builds up?
this child is almost 13 and has never had a cavity. Brushes well, but usually only once a day.

A. Take the child to the store and let them pick out a fun toothpaste and toothbrush - manual only please no spinbrushes. This will get the child excited about brushing. Convince the little one to brush after every meal (at least the ones at home) as well as at wake-up and before bed. You will probably have to help. Little kids have a tendency to pick one side of their mouth to brush well, and they ignore the rest of their teeth.

Also, watch the diet. If your child eats lots of sugary sweets, drinks kool-aid and sodas (even diet soda), and doesn't get enough milk and vitamin rich veggies the teeth and gums will not produce enough of their own protection.

Lastly, ask the dentist. Some people have teeth that are more succeptible to plaque, stains, and cavities. Your dentist or hygenist will be able to tell you if it was caused by biology, diet, or brushing habits.

My 3 year old's dentist wants to put crowns on 4 of his teeth and to remove 2?
Q. I am confused as my childs dentist wants to put crowns on 4 of my 3 year old sons teeth and wants to remove 2 teeth?? What should I do? My husband is apprehensive about it and is telling me that his new teeth will come out anyways in a few years and to leave them alone??
I forgot to mention that his front 4 teeth are decayed due to milk that he slept with overnight

A. I would get a second opinnion. I have found through personal experience do not take your kid or yourself to a dentist that is part of a chain. They are GOLD DIGGERS and do not care about the condition of the mouth or the pain that they inflict.

Sorry sore subject. Take your baby to a different dentist!
