Thinking about dental implant 4 missing front tooth. Do I have to walk around w/ a missing tooth after surgey?

Q. I know it's an expensive procedure, but I don't want to walk around with a missing tooth for months after surgery, while the gum heals. Anyone know if they place a temporary fake tooth there immediately after surgery?

A. Implants are an excellent choice! I personally have one.
The dentist can have what's called a FLIPPER fabricated prior to your extractions so you'll never have to be without the teeth. A flipper os basically a retainer with fake teeth on it. The healing time is anywhere from 4-6 months. This is needed for the bone to grow around the implant and make it strong.
I heard that the placement of the implant was painful and was prescribed Percocet, but didn't even need one. I did not need the bone graft either which may be necessary for you on front teeth. I have heard this can cause some discomfort.
Good luck, I never regretted my decision. The implant looks great and you'd never be able to tell otherwise. =)

Is there any way to quicken the numbness from the dentist away?
Q. Just got back from the dentist and they told me it will be 3-6 hours before I will be un-numbed enough to eat. I had it done at three o'clock though so I kind of would like to speed up the process.

A. The *only* way to quicken the numbness is increasing your heartbeat (as in exercising, running, walking fast, etc). But, unless you only had a filling or a regular cleaning, you aren't supposed to exercise after going to the dentist.

How to get over fear of dentist?
Q. I'm terrified of dentists, and specifically, the shots they give you to numb you. Thats what really freaks me out. I need to go to the dentist but Im too afraid to. I need braces but I know they'll give me a shot cause I have a cavity. What can I do?

A. Your Fears are Normal. Fear of dentists is very common. Let's face it -- going to the dentist is not fun; dentists do poke and prod a sensitive area of your body. Often an upsetting childhood dental experience has lasting effects into adulthood. Sometimes people "inherit" fears from parents, whose experiences with dentists may have been traumatic.

But dentists are better trained today and have tools and techniques to minimize discomfort. There is very little, if any, pain associated with any procedure performed at a dental office. The anesthetics used for injections are profound and should completely numb the area being worked on. There is even an anesthetic used before the injection so you are already numb before you even get the shot that numbs you!

Find a Good Dentist for You. Finding a dentist who understands that you are anxious and will work with you will increase your comfort. Many dentists offer practices specifically targeted towards fearful people and offer a variety of solutions that may include sedation, hypnosis, and lots of reassurance. Talk to people you know about their dentists to find one who is sympathetic. Schedule an office visit to meet the dentist without doing any dental work. This will give you an opportunity to evaluate the office. Be prepared to pay for the dentist's time. If the office finds this a strange request, move on -- this is not the dentist for you.

Sedation is an Option. The dentist can provide a number of sedation options. They range from giving you a pill that you take an hour before coming to the office to calm you, to general anesthesia. Nitrous oxide ("laughing gas") is one option that can relax you. Avoid it, however, if you are pregnant. While Novocaine will numb your mouth so you cannot feel pain. many people are fearful of the needle. A dentist can use a local anesthetic to numb the area before beginning the injection.

Step by Step You don't have to do it all at once. Schedule an examination so you can meet the dentist. Then come back for a cleaning. A couple of successful, low stress experiences, will help you cope.

Think positive! Remember--when you get through this, you will prove to yourself you are a strong person, who takes care of your body. This will be over soon--and don't forget to reward yourself!

For Extreme Fears You may need to turn to a good psychologist or counselor. You may have so much anxiety about the dentist's office you can't even bring yourself to walk into the office. Phobias can be treated using techniques such as desensitization therapy, which is very effective.

Why are some dentist really good and others really suck at it?
Q. I have had some bad dentist before and it has caused me to be really afraid of going to the dentist. EVEN to seeing the good ones..... I need some work done and am scared to go......

A. no you are right; lousy mechanics and good ones; good teachers and bad; good presidents and bad; try 1 800 dentist b/c if you have a problem you have somewhere else to complain to make a paper trail; word of mouth from others about their experiences; call and ask questions; if it is a problem , move on; and so on ; don't just walk in blind; it will cost you big time; not cheap so do your homework before you lay your money on the table; also someone who keeps up on research etc; antique office sometimes keep walking

I had one who wanted to put me out to take out all 4 wisdom teeth ; told him to take out only the one bothering me ; he told me other impact and need to come out ;declined; years later another dentist told me that I didn' t have wisdom teeth on top ; never did , never will ; would show up on xray - so prior dentist wanted the money and then splice my gums open to make it look good - been there done all that ; bad in all professions no matter what
