Q. I need to change some of my teeth. What is the best material I should ask my dentist to use - quality and money wise. What else shall I consider when having teeth replaced?
A. You can't replace your teeth, unless you go with implants and then you wouldn't be asking that question here. so I can only assume you mean fillings. Crowns are most of the time covered by porcelain which is OK but they still have to be placed on roots which are still susceptable to decay. So you need to brush and floss to keep your crowns from becoming undermined by decay. Now if your talking strictly fillings then it depends what type of dentist you see. A cosmetic dentist will sell you white fillings. White fillings are basically plastic bonded to your teeth. It's the bonding part that is the most important part of placing a white filling it is very technique sensative and therefore more prone to fail if your dentist is not careful. Metal fillings are amalgams; they can be placed under water, in a bloody area, and twice as fast as plastic and they will still achieve a very good seal with the tooth, BUT they are ugly. I usually reccomend metal fillings for practical people not obsessed by their teeth and the thought of the few micrograms of mercury leached out by the amalgam over the lifetime of the filling. They're cheap, but ugly and last a long time most of the time. Plastic goes into my most reliable patients, who walk into my office with a hand mirror open obssesed by appearance. They are more expensive and look great. If your'e not the most reliable dental patient then go for the metal. But then your dentist should tell you all this.
Issue with mental illness. Is this a reasonable request to ask my dentist for with iv sedation?
Q. Is it a reasonable request of me to ask the dentist to first give me laughing gas and numbing gel on my arm first and to wait until I'm comfortable enough to let him do the iv? Because I'm terrified of needles and can't do gas alone, I've already tried. I also have schizoaffective disorder and the stress from freaking out about it makes my voices worse. Are these reasonable requests?
A. I'm afraid of needles too. I remember having a 20' conversation about it with my dentist when my tooth broke so he would be able to fix it. I'm so terrified of needles that when I had to take a blood test 4 doctors were holding my arm because I was shaking. Well it's natural for voices to become worse when you're stressed... And it's okay to be stressed about needles. All people have fears.
I guess you take medication about the schizoaffective disorder, don't u? I've read that vitamin B12 and Omega 3 would also help the psychotic symptoms calm down. Take B vitamin complex and Omega 3 capsules. With these and the medication your voices will stay at bay :):):) The vitamins also help with stress!!!
Wish u luck :):):)

Are these reasonable terms to ask my dentist for before he puts in a IV sedation for my wisdom teeth removal?

A. You won't get numbing gel on your arm. The skin needs to be sterilized with the alcohol gauze and the gel would mess it up. You'll be fine, don't worry.
Is it reasonable for me to ask the dentist this question?
Q. I absolutely abhor the polishing portion of routine dental cleanings. Is it reasonable for me to ask my dentist not to perform that procedure? If I ask, what are the chances that he will oblige? Thanks.
A. yes you can ask them not to do the polishing..I opt not to have it done..the main reason being the polish contains a fine pumice & takes off very thin layers of enamel.I also can't stand the feeling & the polishing cups are made of rubber/latex..I have a severe allergy to rubber/latex
some dentist & hygienists don't like it that you don't have it done, since the cleaning doesn't always remove the stains foods & drinks leave ...which is why they use the polishing as well..makes them look like they didn't do their jobs well.
as in all medical fields..dental is included..a patient can legally accept or refuse treatments.
