What is the procedure for becoming a dentist for someone who's earned a BBA in Business Management?

Q. Hello, I am 25 years of age and have graduated from a well known private University with a degree in Management. My initial plan was to take over my family jewelry business yet recently I have been putting serious thought into becoming a Dentist. My hopes are that I would be able to shave off a year or two from the total amount of years needed to be a dentist since I've already graduated from a 4-year school. Thank you in advance.

A. Unfortunately, courses at the undergraduate level do not count towards courses towards a doctorate (like a DDS for dentists), except in extraordinary circumstances (your courses from your management program will not count).

Because medical programs require practical work, residencies, and/or internships, part of the requirements of reputable programs is the amount of time you put in. The way you might shave time off your course of study is to take extra courses each semester, but that will be very challenging, as the courses are much more time-consuming above the undergraduate level (as befits a new degree of learning!).

The long and short is that you cannot get a DDS or dental degree very quickly, unless you stack courses. Most universities have a rule that you can only take one course above the expected courseload, or two by petitioning the faculty and/or Dean, which is very difficult to do in the first year.

Can you become a dentist by attending the University of Arizona?
Q. Is it possible to become a dentist by attending the University of Arizona? If so, is that a job that would be hard to make?

A. The University of Arizona does not have a Dentistry program. They only have the MD/DO. However, there is a DDS program in Mesa.

How much dose getting a filling at a dentist cost if you dont have insurance?
Q. I have had a cavity in one of my back teeth for some time. I have been putting of going to the dentist because I don't have insurance and I will have to pay out of pocket in cash. Its starting to hurt so I think its best to get in done soon. I was wondering how much this is going to run me. Whats the most it could possibly set me back?

A. Hello, well my friend the question you ask is a bit like asking "how high is up?"...The cost of a filing is based on a number of factors..(1) how many surfaces will the filing cover. Back teeth have five surfaces, 4 sides and the top...Most DDS charge partially by how many surfaces a filing involves. (2) an additional fee could be made depending on how deep and extensive the filing is....Lets say that you have a two surface not very deep filing to be done. I would say that the average fee for that filing will be around $80.00....If however the decay is to deep you may find that instead of a filing you may need a root canal and that will get into your pocket in the range of possibly $600.....providing the tooth doesn't have to be crowned as well. Good luck and I wish you well.
