Q. Besides money, I don't understand what interests people in becoming dentists (DDS/DMD) or podiatrists (DPM). These seem like strange fields to truly be passionate about. Can anybody explain?
A. I've wondered that myself. As an MD student, I really do find the various diseases of the body interesting (as do most people if the ratings of House are any indication). That said, I can't see myself getting psyched to learn about cavities and gingivitis. I assume they are mostly after the money, after all, your average dentist these days makes more than your average doctor. Even so, I would never trade my med school education for a dental school one.
I want to become a dentist. What do I have to do to become dentist?
Q. I am a 33 year old man. I have bachelor of science in mathematics. However, I cannot seem to find any job with it and wish to become dentist. My question is how long would it take me to be dentist if I start this year? Also my university does not offer dentistry. Where can I find dentistry schools? I live in northern Virginia.
A. SINCE YOU ALREADY HAVE 4 YEARS OF UNDERGRAD, YOU MUST NOW FULFILL THAT THE DENTAL SCHOOL PRE-REQUISITE CO.COURSEWORK IS LACKING. A TALK WITH A DEAN FROM A DENTAL SCHOOL IS NEEDED.

Why do people become dental hygienist if they can become dentist?
Q. Ok, why do people go and study to become hygienist?
If its just like 3 years less than becoming a dentist?
I mean they can ask for loans, if they dont have money and they can pay it later,
or is it really because they have family or why?

A. its cheaper & shorter course. To be a dentist you need a clinic and a lot of investment. A Hygienist just have to work under a dentist, with out investment.

A. My wife is a hygienist and I'm in dental school and she always gets the question about why hygiene and not dentistry. The main reason is she wants to spend time raising our family. She is a better student than I am and could probably get accepted if she wanted to but it's her preference not to. Hygiene pays very well and it's an extra 4 years of school or about $150,000-$200,000. Not chump change.
