Any good remedies for getting rid of a headache..?

Q. I've had a headache all day, and I want it gone :( but I can't swallow pills and I already took baby asprin in the morning, and I took some liquid childrens medicine almost two hours ago. but it still won't go away. it's at bay right now, like it doesn't hurt as much but it's still bothering me a lot. and I can feel it like behind my right eye. and tips or remedies are appreciated. thanks in advance!

A. IHave you seen an orthodontist/dentist to be examined for TMJ/TMD. Tension stress from your TM joint in your jaw can make you sickly with migraines if out of place even a smidge.I got it from a jolt to my head and the tmj muscles stretched out causing sickening headaches, face pain and ear aches. Please check even with your doctor about it.

Many things can trigger a HEADACHES/MIGRAINES: using your arm in an awkward way (bowling) when you don't normally do that, lack of food (skipping meals), head resting in a hairdressers sink, going to a concert with light show, video game screen with fast movements & flashing lights, staring in the light (sun) constantly on your eyes...etc.

You may want to check your settings on all your digital items that you are using. Each device you use has a warning that MANY COMPLETELY IGNORE. Go under your settings for your screen settings on your computer, laptops, televisions, monitors, digital games, etc. AND LOWER THE BRIGHTNESS ON THE SCREEN.

Also, don't forget that all these items are a heat source and depending on how close you are to the item you are using, you are affecting your personal body sources. (ie. flickering lights affect the eyes, laptops on laps affect fluids. etc.)

You may be completely dehydrated if you aren't drinking adequates amounts of water daily. Here's a guide to help you figure out how much water you require daily for your weight.

? Your Weight Times (.5) Equals Divided By 8oz (or 1 Cup) Equals # Cups of Water/Day

 150lbs x .5 = 75/8 = 9 Cups of Water/day
 175lbs x .5 = /8 = 11 Cups of Water/day
 200lbs x .5 = 100/8 = 12.5 Cups Water/day

If you take your medication with an extra caffeine drink, it will hit your system faster, but that only means enough to swallow the medication and wash it down. It does not mean drink an entire can or you will suffer from extreme caffeine withdrawal (rebound migraines).

1. I used to use a combination of medications which included 400mg Ibuprofen 4x a day with food. This takes the swelling and inflammation down. DO NOT exceed1600mg in one day and you may need prilosec for stomach protection as ALL ANTI INFLAMMATORIES are difficult on the stomach. ***You can use Tylenol with Ibuprofen and Aspirin watch for daily maximums & don't exceed.

2. Robaxacet is Tylenol (acetominophen) combined with methocarbonal (muscle relaxant)...this also comes with codeine on request from the pharmacist. This only relaxes any tight muscles around the pain and helps reduce some pain. You can use Robaxacet with Ibuprofen and Aspirin, BUT NOT Tylenol as it's already an ingredient in this pill.

3. Robaxacyl is Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) combines with methocarbonal (muscle relaxant)...this has a blood thinning active ingredient and isn't ideal for anyone under age 16 years or complications with blood pressure, ailments, etc. This both takes down the inflammation as well as treats the pain. You can use Robaxacyl with Ibuprofen and Tylenol, BUT NOT Aspirin as it's already an ingredient in this pill.
------------------------------...
4. Aleve is a Nonsteroidal Anti Inflammatory (Naproxen) which will helps reduce the inflammation, and as the inflammation decreases so does the pain; BUT you CANNOT mix this drug with any of the above mentioned safely.

5. Dynamint has been used on horses legs for years, but it does an amazing job on sore neck muscles. It's ingredients are Peppermint Oil, Eucalyptus Oil , Tea Tree Oil and Calendula Oil.

6. Deep Cold Gold is an alternative rub that works very well on tight aching tendons on your upper shoulders, neck and TMJ joints.

When I was 16 years old I had severe tension headaches that made the ligament behind my ear pop out like a big ole bump. The doctor prescribed a low dose of Elavil (amitryptaline) & it was gone within days. The Elavil in high doses is used for depression but they use it for car accidents because it relaxes the muscles from whiplash.

If you experience a headache with ANY LOSS OF WEAKNESS, SLURRING, IMBALANCE or FEVER, then you need to seek medical attention immediately for a consult to make sure there isn't something more serious going on.

what is the difference between pediatric dentists and adult dentist?
Q. I took my three year old child to an adult dentist for a cleaning and exrays because the cost of the pediatric dentist was significantly higher. They found out that she has two cavities. The dentist said that he could take care of her their in his office, but he does not specialize in childrens teeth. I am wondering what are the risks involved to take a child to an adult dentist? Could he permanantly damage her adult teeth that have not formed yet? Are the anethetics the same?

A. All dentists are taught and trained in dental school to treat both children's teeth and adult teeth so a general dentist will not be more likely to damage children's teeth as stated by the other posters. The main difference between the two is the special training pediatric dentists have to handle things like behavioral problems in the child patient and special needs children. Some dentists just do not like to treat children because it takes much more patience and a certain bedside manner and pediatric dentists excel in those areas. Any dental work a child needs can be handle by an adult dentist as long as the child cooperates. Everything used on adult teeth can be used on children's teeth and anesthetics as well.

Do steel crowns on kids have to be replaced with porcelain?
Q. The dentist says that all the steel crowns have to be replaced on my 15 year old twins. (I say if it isn't broke, don't fix it.) But they say that it messes up their gums. Is that true? Should I let them do it? Should I wait until they are older?

A. What they are saying is true.

Are the stainless steel crowns on baby teeth? Or permanent teeth?

The stainless steel is USUALLY only used on baby teeth, therefore once the tooth exfoliates, the crown is gone. But if it was done on a permanent tooth, the porcelain crown should be done.

It can be an irritant to your childrens gums. Also, the stainless steel crowns are not as strong/permanent. They will eventually decay and break off, and may result in the loss of that tooth down the road. Its best to fix it now, in order to save the heartache later.

To the poster below me - it is AMALGAM you are talking about - the metal fillings. That isn't what she is asking about. A metal filling and steel crown are too different things.

When to start taking my baby to the dentist?
Q. My son is 10 months...well almost, and he has 4 teeth, 2 on top and 2 on bottom, we brush them every night before bed (well if he lets me) with the baby finger brush and toothpaste (its ok to swallow) When should i start to take him to see a dentist? Has anyone taken there child, maybe younger than 10 months?

A. Your son is ready to see the dentist. I recommend that children see the dentist when the first teeth come out or by the age of 1. There are alot of things new mothers do not know about children's dental care. For instance, you should not leave a bottle with milk or juice with the baby at night if they have teeth as they will begin to decay very quickly. Also, if using toothpaste, use only childrens toothpaste because adult toothpaste contains fluoride which if swallowed, will cause abnormal development of the adult teeth.

Taking my autistic 3 year old to the dentist?

Q. My 3 year old daughter has her first dentist appointment tomorrow. I am really nervous because I know she is not going to tolerate the dentist touching her teeth. (This is why I have not taken her in sooner!) Does anybody have any related experience or advice?
The reason I am taking her in now is because her front tooth has turned a light grey color in the past few days, and I am thinking there is a problem with the root.

A. OK, since you've already got the appointment, here's exactly what I would do. I have a daughter that has autism, she's now 9-1/2, so I've BTDT.

First, make sure the dentist office understands that your daughter has autism, that she probably won't be very cooperative, and that much might not get done at this appointment. Explain that you really want to work with them to help your daughter learn to be comfortable and tolerate a dentist visit. That this visit is more of a learning experience than anything. Ask if they can look in your mouth as well, so it's "Mommy's turn, then Daughters turn" type thing.

I have no idea your daughters level of understanding, but mine wouldn't have gotten it a bit at this age. For mine at 3, I wouldn't really bother trying to prepare in advance, I'd just treat it as an adventure at the time, very positive and fun, "look at all the cool stuff" type thing.

If your daughter would understand talking about events that will happen tomorrow, I'd get a childrens video with a dentist visit (favorite characters if possible) or a book with a dentist visit and show her really excited, "Look what we get to do tomorrow, just like ......."

At the visit, remain calm. Remind staff that it is likely that no much will be accomplished, but see if the dentist can at least get a glimpse of that front tooth. We had the dentist "COUNT THE TEETH" so he could get a quick look. My daughter loved numbers and this fit nicely with her obsessions. The other trick I used was "you only have to keep your mouth open for 20 seconds" and I would count out loud, pacing myself so the dentist could do the exam. Believe me, once those 20 seconds were up, her mouth shut like a bear trap.

It's likely that the tooth is dying, or dead, and nothing really needs to be done. This can happen from trauma to the tooth. Since it's a baby tooth, I'd keep it in place if possible, to keep the space open. I had such a tooth as a kid. Usually it causes no pain, mine didn't. Only problem is that it's hard to tell when your child has autism. They often can't tell you about the pain, or feel it much "hyposensitivity".

If she has older siblings, bring her along to appointments so she can observe. Take it slow and don't force it. If she won't sit in the chair, you sit in the chair and see if she'll sit in the assistant chair. Then switch places. Make it a game. See if she'll sit on your lap in the chair.

You're setting up lifetime patterns here, and you don't want her forever scared of the dentist by a traumatic experience. Kids with autism really hold onto things like that. I wish you lots of good luck! I now have a little girl who has no problems going to the dentist, though she still hates teeth cleaning (I still do the counting). Her fist filling and major x-rays were done under general anesthesia. Since then, she's done very well with a little laughing gas and once, some novicane.

When to should baby see a dentist?
Q. My daughter is 11 months old and she has 8 teeth. She's been teething again and it looks like 2 more are coming in on the bottom. When should she see a dentist? She has a toothbrush and she brushes her teeth herself without toothpaste? Should she be using one of those toddler toothpastes now?

A. Take your child for a check-up at your earliest convenience. Make it a simple affair, and don't scare your child. It's important to make the first appointment very easy. This way she will develop trust with the dentist. Maybe take them with you when you're only having a check-up yourself (don't have treatment that day).
The worst thing I ever see is when parents bring in a child for the first time when they have a toothache, and expect me to "do something". Really stressful for all concerned. Often the child has been told frightful things like "He's not going to hurt you...". Kids aren't stupid, they can read between the lines of that sort of phrase. If you would like me to forward me a brochure about "The First Appointment", then please send me an email address.
Please use a childrens' toothpaste. It helps clean away better than brushing alone. As soon as she stops swallowing paste, you can switch her to an adult paste. Until about the age of 7, no child can be trusted to brush their teeth properly - they don't have the understanding or dexterity. You or your partner MUST do it for her, TWICE a day. Keep her away from any sweetened drinks - cordials, juices ("natural" or otherwise), and soft drinks. Encourage plain tap water.
Ask among friends and family for a dentist who likes kids.

How many ibroprophens should I be taking?
Q. Just got my wisdom teeth out and my dentist subscribed some kind of narcotic that I don't want to take. Since I'm not in too much pain I'm taking ibroprophens instead. It says no more than 6 every 24 hours. However, they're 650 mg, and that seems like a lot, regular is like 200 or something? I took like 4 today and feel fine but should I take less? I don't want to overdose! Thanks.

A. I am assuming your an adult.. if your over the age of 18 then please continue reading if you are younger please consult your parents/ doctor before taking more ibuprofen and do not follow the advise given below. (childrens max of ibuprofen is 500mg at a time but agian please call your doctor to confirm)

Here is the max of ibuprofen you can take a day.. you can take up to 800mg every 6 hours up to three times a day. No more, if you take more then the 800mg at a time you are overdosing and creating damage to your kidneys. Its easier if you buy the 200mg ibuprofen because you only take four at a time (max). Make sure your drinking alot of water and eating, believe it or not ibuprofen works better in patients who eat and drink frequently. Also ibuprofen doesnt fully kick in until the second or third dose, it takes your body some times to absorb the ibuprofen efficiently. What i would suggest is that you take a 800mg dose when you wake up in the morning then take a second dose about 6 hours after and finally one last dose before bed. There isnt any reason for you to set the alarm and take anymore while you sleep. If sleep manages the pain then try not to take pills the more ibuprofen in your system the higher risk of overdosing. if at any time ibuprofen isnt managing the pain call your doctor and see if they can order you other pain killers that arent narcotics.
HOPE THIS HELPS!! best of luck to you and feel better soon!

*** taking 1000mg of ibuprofen at a time is dangerous DO NOT TAKE MORE THEN 800mg with 6 hours minimun between dosages with out your doctors say so.

when should I schedule his first dentist visit?
Q. my son will be one on Monday, and he has one and a half teeth. When do I need to schedule his first dentist appointment?

A. I read somewhere that childrens should start seeing a dentist once a year when they turn 1. I called a pediatric dentist in our area and they said that unless there is a problem or we are concerned about something specific that they don't see children until they are 18 months old. Even thought our guy has 8 teeth. So I would call the dentist you plan on seeing and see what they say.

Happy first birthday to your son!

work in the dental field. should i ask for professional discount?

Q. i have dental ins. i pay my 20%portion but because i work in the dental field ( not at this office.this is a childrens dentist..i have 3 kids) shouldnt i get a professional discount? when i first started taking my oldest (8 yr ago) i would ask and they would give me discount. but i hate asking every time!

A. I would ask if you take them to the same office you work at. It might be annoying to ask every time but is it worth the money you save?

I think the people who said you are cheap are being unfair. Most places where people work, they get discounts. People at McDonald's get free food, people who work at department stores get a discount, police officers get out of tickets, it is the same thing!

I also have a friend who works at a Children's dentistry and she gets a discount.

What are some unique childrens books ideas?
Q. I have a project in English class that we have to create our own childrens books. We have to come up with our own plot, theme, title, etc. for the book.

Does anyone have or know any unique ideas that I could get inspiration from? Maybe some title suggestions as well?

A. TITLE: Chompers

Plot: A young child learns about the importance of eating well to prevent major problems in the future with teeth... Through the book, the child meets a tooth, an apple that is healthy for his teeth, a piece of candy that is bad for his teeth, a dentist who is gentle, a dentist who is mean, a tooth brush, and a tube of toothpaste... The characters include the tooth, tooth brush and toothpaste in "human-like" fashion... They talk, move, walk, and are an intricate part of the message being delivered to children...

TITLE: Gazuntite!

Plot: A bunny named Gaz learns the importance of not spreading around germs, especially since the bunny is sick and causing all of his other friends and family to get sick too... Gaz realizes that it's not only best to cover your mouth when you sneeze or cough, but to also try and cough into your sleeve instead of into the air or into your hand, or paw because if you sneeze on your hand you will spread germs around when touching faucets, door handles, pencils, crayons, etc... The bunny learns that the best thing for a cold are hot soup, veggies, and plenty of rest... Gaz's friends all visit him and lecture him on why he got sick in the first place - because he went outside in the cold without a coat... The story ends with Gaz feeling much better and playing outside and having learned the importance of saying "bless you" after someone sneezes...

TITLE: Riches to Rags

Plot: A wealthy lion cub has it all... All the toys a kitty could want, all the food in the grasslands, friends, and money... However, the lion cub keeps losing all of his possessions b/c he gambles them away, making bets on things like "what branch will that butterfly land on next?".. .He loses everything and becomes an angry and scary lion when he hits rock bottom... Hiss friends help him realize the error of his ways and help him to regain his pride, pun intended...
