Any one here a dentist, or know anything about dentists?

Q. This really doesn't have to do with people but about my dog. My dog has a chipped tooth and need a root canal. There is no dog dentist any where near me. Closest ones hours away. I heard somthing about people dentists working with vet clinics to do dogs teeth. Is this true? Where would I find out if any one in my area does something about like that?

Of course that includes anesthesia, antibiotics and pain killers, but still! She's worth every cent I have to spend to keep her healthy, but this is going to be tough.

So has your dog (or cat) ever had to have dental surgery, or any other type of expensive procedure? How much did it cost?

BTW, don't let your dog chew on any hard toys! Those hard plastic Nylabones are a no-no and my dog loves them. The dentist told me a chew toy should pass the 3 following criteria:
1. Soft enough to make an indentation with your thumbnail.
2. At least a little flexible.
3. If it is hard enough to hurt you if you bang it on your knee, it's too hard for the dog to chew on.

A. Why can't your vet just pull the tooth? It should be under two hundred dollars for everything including extraction. Is it broken below the gumline?

Q. We just bought a dog and now the whole house smells just like her. She didn't do anything, except walk around. I want to know how to get rid of the smell without having to get rid of the dog.

A. Is it dog breath you smell? If so, train your dog to allow you to brush her teeth. Regularly take her to a vet dentist for checkups because she could have cavities or plaque build-up that is causing her bad breath.

Is it her "hormones" you smell? If so, make an appointment to have her spayed. This will not only help control the pet overpopulation, help other puppies get adopted through shelters, help her live longer, but will stop her from emitting the "in-season" smell.

Is it her fur? If so, give her regular baths or schedule regular baths for her with a kind, certified groomer. Also, regularly(if not daily) vacuum your house/furniture to remove odor causing dander. A solution of water and baking powder is good to wash walls with or wash fabric in to remove simple odors. I suggest a steam cleaner for floors and upholstered furniture.

Don't forget to regularly hug your pet and tell her how much you appreciate her. After all, she's probably wondering how to get rid of your smell.

What should be done for a dog that lost a nail?

Q. No, this is not a joke. My dog is healthy but had an accident today and one of his nails got ripped out. I am concerned because of the vein that is in nails of animals and about infection. I can't take him to the vet, but would like to know of any other ways to possibly take better care of his injury.
It also was ripped clean off, it is not cracked or anything.

A. Make up a bowl of one tablespoon of salt to one pint of boiled cooled water.

Dunk the foot into it every few hours and if he has been out. Best to put a plastic bag over the foot when he goes out for wees for a couple of days.

The nailbed infects quite easily, and when it does it can travel up into the bone and that is a nightmare to get better. (Osteomylitis).

Salt water is the best thing I know of for preventing infection and it will not sting. UK vets, doctors and dentists recommend salt water for everything.

A. Dog breath is NOT NORMAL. Bad breath is caused by the bacterica that is growing below the gumline, indicating tartar. If your dog has tartar build up then I would recomend a professional veterinary dental prophylaxis (dental cleaning). You can ask your vet if they do their cleaning with an ultrasonic scaler (this scaler works the best for cleaning but can only be used while your pet is under anesthesia.)Yes Greenies do help but it does not remove the tartar on their teeth that already exsits. Also keep in mind that Greenies are not a low calorie treat, so if your pet is overweight it wouldn't be a great treat for them. Brush your pet's teeth at least once a day and don't use human toothpaste (the reason is because human toothpaste is meant to be spit out VS animal toothpaste does not). Try CET toothpaste, poultry flavor seems to be the all time favorite with dogs. Brushing your pet's teeth once a day will GREATLY reduce the plaque reduction therefore getting rid of doggy breath. I hope that helps some. Also keep in mind bad with bad doggy breath it can also be a sign of dental disease. You said you brought your dog to the vet and she said nothing is wrong. If I were you I would bring your pet to a veterinary practice that specializes in veterinary dentistry. Some vets do NOT like dentistry and you as the pet owner noticed the problem and I would recomend that you bring it to a veterinary dentist. It's also possible your dog could have an abcessed tooth (this too can cause bad breath). Dogs eat as a survial skill, so even if they have soreness in their mouth & are in pain they eat to survive.

Are there such thing as false teeth for old dogs?

Q. My 17 years old pom has lost most of it's teeth. It is in fairly good health otherwise.

He has trouble eating and I grind most food in a food processor for him.

I know you will think this is a stupid question but can a dog dentist make dentures for him?
