Is there a dentist in St.Louis that will put me to sleep before performing surgery to remove my cavity?

A. I don't know about your area, but if you are just having a filling, I doubt it. If you are having the tooth removed or a root canal, you could get put to sleep, but chances are, you'll have to pay that fee. I'm having two teeth removed tomorrow and I wanted to get put to sleep as well (same fear here!) but I would have to pay close to $500 to get put to sleep because my insurance carrier doesn't deem it medically necessary for me to get general anesthesia, just the local they give in the shots. Check with your insurance company on what they will cover.

Q. I am scheduled soon for a total knee replacement and I need at least 3 teeth extracted prior to the surgery. I'm disabled with Medicare and Medicaid. I have not had any luck finding a dentist that is willing to see me. I live in northeast Missouri in the Hannibal area. Would be willing to travel to Colubia or St. Louis if necessary.

A. In our state medicaid only pays for exams, xrays and extractions on anyone 18 and over. And unfortuneately here, you can't call medicaid to get a list of doctors. The only way to find out is to get out the phone book and start calling the offices and asking them one by one. Medicare doesn't pay for dental at all. If you can't find a dentist that will accept your medicaid, try going to the nearest dental school and having it done... a lot of times it's either free or has an extremely low fee.
