Q. I am currently a junior in high school and I am 100% sure I want to be a dentist. I am looking for schools to apply to (preferably in or around Pennsylvania, like on the east coast) that offer a decent program for predental studies. I am undecided on my major, probably biology or biochemistry..
What are some schools I should look into? Schools that have good percentages of students accepted into dental schools.
(I am also planning to do NROTC)

A. It's wonderful that you want to become a dentist! Any health care profession requires alot of hard work and good grades.
I'm an ex-Navy Doctor(MD) and did graduate research in dentistry before med school. I was in the Health Professions Scholarship Program(HPSP) as a Naval Officer. It's NOT a good idea to be NROTC or any generalized military program as an undergraduate as it can restrict your future options as related to professional school. You can enter the HPSP program AFTER you are admitted to dental school if you pass the physical requirements. Navy medicine and dentistry are the BEST in the world!
Any university that has an undergraduate premed/predent program will work. You need to make sure and check the entry requirements of the dental schools that you are interested in attending.
They will list the required courses that you need to take as an undergraduate. Majoring in a "hard" science as opposed to a "pre" program will give you more options if you decide to do graduate work to obtain an advanced degree in case you don't get into dental school right away. I majored in vertebrate zoology and minored in chemistry.
Remember that the timetable is at least 1 year in advance for admission to professional school. You also need to take the DAT(Dental Admissions Test) which tests on basic science an includes a chalk carving of a tooth). It may be a good idea to attend a university that has a dental school. There are 5 dental schools in Pennsylvania. In Philadelphia there are 2, UOP and Temple. In Pittsburgh, there are 2, Univ. of Pittsburgh and Bradford, and in Monroeville is Sanford Brown. Univ. of Pennsylvania, Temple, and Univ. of Pittsburgh all have excellent undergraduate programs.
Other Catholic schools in Philly area like Villanova, St. Joe's, etc., can also be a good start with links to fine dental schools like Creighton and Marquette.
Good luck! Never quit your goal.

how long does it take to become a dentist?
Q. i was thinking of becoming a general dentist who does not specialize. i live in new york. how LONG and what TYPE of of school should i EXPECT and TAKE?
A. I am a Orthodontist in the state of Pennsylvania. I went to University of Pittsburgh and got into the pre-med program. I progressed verrry excessivly. I only had to stay in college for 3 years. Some people even stay for only 2 in the pre-med program (for dentistry). This is only if you are VERY smart. I then went on to the University of Pittsburgh Dental School. I was originally planning to be a general dentist but since I only had to do 2 years of undergraduate school I decided to do a specialty. I went on to 4 years of Dental School...After these 4 years I was able to practice general dentistry, but I decided to do an extra 2 years of fellowship to become an orthodontist. I am now an orthodontist for over 15 years. I love my job and I hope you will too.
Here is the breakdown:
4 years Undergrad
4 Years Dental school
Take all your exams and excel in all of your classes and you should be good. In undergrad aim to get at least a 3.7+ each period. It is very competitive to get into dental school. Get good grades in math, chemistry,biology.. ect... |
You will end up making good money if you have a good practice. I am currently in private practice. I am not afraid or embaressed to show my salary.
My first year I got only $74,000.
Second year I moved up to about $90,000
Third year I purchased an old doctors office with all his patients. I started making $150,000 +/- for my next 5 years.
I started to be well known in the area and made close to $200,000 a year. It is now my 17th year and I make $260,000 a year. This is after all of my insurances and what I pay my employees. My wife is a dental hygentist and makes about $75,000 a year. My friend who I went to dental school with is now a Maxillofacial Surgeon and has been practicing for also about 15 years and he makes close to $350,000 a year. There are many specialties to chose from in dentistry but if you choose to be a general dentist you should not get your DMD but get your DDS. With your DDS you can practice general surgery and hold both a DMD and a DDS. Your salary breakdown will probably be as follow:
1-5 years- $75,0000-$150,000
5-10 years- $150,000-$175,000
10+- $200,000+++
My uncle was a dentist and specialized in. General Dentistry, Implants, General Surgery, Cosmetic Surgery. He was the top doctor in the area and made about $700,000 a year after 25 years of practice.

What's the best Dental university/school in the NE of USA?
Q. I want to be a dentist or a dental hygienist. I want to go to a college where people say "Wow... there?". Is there any colleges famous for dentistry?
I'm currently in high school and know sure that I want to do something in the dental industry. What activites/classes should i take to prepare for this? I've decided in taking chemistry and biology since it's the only classes I can link to it.
