How do you trust a dentist that says your kids need braces?

Q. Understanding that dentists run a business to generate profits, it seems most will recommend braces for kids. How do you know if they really need them? A couple of dentist have said they are necessary due to an overbite, but isn't a slight overbite normal. When do you know that it's more of a cosmetic procedure rather than a medically necessary one?

A. There are two big reasons for braces. The first is to improve function--like if there is trouble chewing, or if the patient keeps biting his cheeks, or if the teeth on the top and bottom are contacting in such a way that the forces between them are higher than normal, causing wear to the teeth, etc. Also, in super crowded teeth there are more areas that are harder to clean with the toothbrush, so straightening them out can help to maintain good oral hygiene and prevent tooth decay.

The second reason is obviously cosmetics, and although there are "ideal" skeletal profiles that dentists learn about, this is largely up to the patient. Some people are terribly self-conscious, while others are just fine with the way they look and have no interest in changing.

Most dentists recommend an ideal treatment plan with the goal of making your teeth as perfect as possible in both function (which is always the most important consideration) and cosmetics. Unfortunately, the more expensive treatments are often (but not always) the better ones because they take more time and higher quality materials are used. I like to think that for most of us, the money is secondary. A huge part of the treatment plan is also based on what YOU (and your child) ultimately want, and if you are unsure about the benefits to you then you should definitely discuss them with your dentist before you decide if you want to follow through. S/he should also tell you what could happen if you choose not to put braces on at this point.

By getting a few different opinions and asking lots of questions, you should get a good feel for whether you and your child are ready to go through with braces at this point. The decision is completely yours, and all you can really do is just be as informed as you can when you make it.

How much would an visit to the dentist and a filling for a cavity cost without insurance?
Q. I haven't seen the dentist for a while and I'm pretty sure I have 3 cavities. I know it's a lot but I have always had weak enamel and try my best but still I get cavities. I even had cavities in my baby teeth even though I took good care of them.

So, How much would a visit to the dentist and a filling for a cavity cost without insurance?

A. charges vary from city to city and dentist to dentist... the best thing is to pick 3 closest to you and call and ask them.

now, you know, dental insurance isn't free. all those years that you got off scot-free, not paying monthly premiums, saved you hundreds and hundreds of dollars. that should be enough to cover your fillings.

Can a dental hygienist tell a dentist to put on clean gloves?
Q. If a dental hygienist notices that a dentist forgot to put on a fresh pair of gloves between patients, would it be okay for her to say something to the dentist (in front of the patient)? What would be the best way to solve this problem? The dentist has done this on occasion before.

A. I have experienced this in my hygiene career and sometimes it is a careless dentist (or other staff member) and sometimes it is an honest mistake. A couple of ways I have handled this are -

1. said nothing that would alert the patient and handed them a new pair of gloves prior to them getting into the mouth
2. asked them if I could speak to them for a minute outside the room and let them know
3. just made eye contact with the Dr. and pointed to the gloves on their hands to jog their memory
4. held out the box of gloves at them
(I have attempted to do all of these behind the patients head or at least out of the line of site, because who wants to be shown their wrong in front of the patient or staff)

If you think it is a ongoing problem and you feel that the dentist will get upset or be offended, you might opt to hold onto the mirror and explorer (so they can't do the exam) until you see they have changed their gloves and if they haven't, hand them gloves first and then the instruments.Or maybe leave a new set of gloves on top of the instruments on the tray so they can't get to the instruments without seeing them.

If this is a constant obvious problem and their are copious amounts of other "dirty" offenses you might see if you can make some positive changes in the practice or find a different practice to work in. Honestly, I graduated 15 years ago and alot has changed, so if the Dr. you are working for is older they may just not know about the newer protocols. There is an awful lot of new information to take in all the time, but basic cleanliness is an issue that cannot be compromised since some medically compromised patients could be severly affected....Not only are you able, but you must address the issue for everyone's safety. After all, if dirty gloves are going into a patient's mouth, what else are they touching the bathroom doorknob? (that you are going to end up touching with your bare hands?)

Good luck + hope that helps!

What is the difference between a dentist and an oral surgeon?
Q. So I went to the dentist last week and they told me I have to see an oral surgeon because the tooth is curved or something like that. What is the difference? Also will they do anything different to pull the tooth or do they just have different tools to use? I'm confused, someone please tell me the difference.
BTW it's to get a tooth pulled.
When you say general anesthesia do you mean just the regular needle they give you in the gum or do you mean they would have to put me to sleep, because I really don't want to be put to sleep.

A. A dentist does general work like cavities, crowns, root canals, etc.

And oral surgeon is more educated and perform surgeries such as removing wisdom teeth and things like that. (more complicated procedures.)

I'm not to sure at all but if it is extremely curved the oral surgeon many have to cut the gum and give you stitches, normal dentist don't do that. Blah, I hope i didn't scare you. And sorry if i am wrong.

could anyone convince me that moving to the USA is a good idea to living in the UK?

Q. Could anyone convince me that its a good idea i pack my bag and move to the usa. i have a degree in computer science.Pllease give me examples, like if there house was cheaper or health care better something like that, than in the UK

A. It's not so easy to just pack up and go. You'd have to go through the humdrum of applying for a work visa, etc. The good news is that there is a demand for comp sci grads and getting a visa for you would be easier than for someone without specific skills.

I fly to England a lot and am familiar with the NHS, prices, etc. Assuming that the buying power of the pound in the UK is equal to the buying power of the dollar in the US, you'll find food, clothing and housing cheaper (except in major metro areas, such as NYC, LA, Seattle or Honolulu). If you move to an area that is comparable to say Manchester as opposed to London, you'll find housing to be cheaper than in the UK. You also get a lot more space for your money. There are no TV licensing fees (you only pay for the service you choose); there are no federal car taxes assessed (some southern states impose a personal property tax, but most states don't), the income tax rate is lower than in the UK and capital gains are taxed at a lower rate. A drivers license costs about 2 pounds. etc etc. In short, you don't pay a lot of the fees that you pay in the UK.

For a young, ambitious person who works hard, the US probably offers better opportunities to move up. The class structures are there, but they're not as rigid. If you were 40+ years old, I'd say stay in the UK, but if you're a young spud in your 20s, I'd say give the US a shot.

Health insurance is a huge problem in the US. Ideally you want your employer to cover it, but you will find more and more employers covering less than 100% or them passing on the riders that insurance companies impose. There are no hard and fast rules. Most insurance plans exclude dental, vision, have limited mental health and limit pharma (things get complicated due to state laws there). You also have the option of paying out of pocket or contracting with a British private carrier before you leave. In most European countries, there are no lifetime caps on care expenses imposed, but insurers in the US do impose them. This is important if you ever became seriously ill and that is why people here lose their homes when a family member becomes seriously ill.

The UK is probably better for broad care of basic illnesses, but the US is better for more complex medical issues in terms of quality of care/access to specialists. British insurers will most likely not cover nursing care in the US (if you required it after an accident). You'd either have to return to Britain if you had a contract or pay out of pocket here (avg $ 5000/month).

To see a doctor where I live costs $ 160 per visit at a walk-in clinic. Antibiotics will cost you anywhere from 8-10 times what you pay in the UK. A visit to the dentist to get your teeth cleaned costs $ 150. .... so.. , IF you consider coming, do also consider contracting for insurance in Britain.

Do i have to take vacation time when i have overtime on that week?
Q. I am an hourly employee in the state of florida. I was asked to work sunday for overtime. So by the end of my day on thursday i will have 40 and friday will make it 48. I have to go to the dentist and leave early tom so i will only be working 44 hours this week. 40 reg and 4 time and a half. My employer is making me take half a vacation day to cover the rest of the day and it will be at straight pay. So my time card will read 44 hours straight pay including the four vacation hours and 4 hours time n a half over time. Can an employer legally make you use your vacation time if you have already worked your 40 plus 4 Additional. And should i be payed the vacation time at overtimerate becasuse really it will be a 48 hour week?

A. Aaron,

This is the Honolulu section. State labor laws differ from state to state so any opinions here would not be something you could rely on. This situation doesn't sound right. I would think you should be paid 40 hours regular time and 4 hours overtime. You could call your state labor department. You would get a better answer if you asked the question in the Miami or Orlando section.

Here is a website for a Miami who can give you some information:
http://www.penichetlaw.com/Wageand_Hour.shtml

Here is more information from a Google search for "Florida wage dispute"
http://www.google.com/#hl=en&source=hp&q=florida+wage+dispute&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=&fp=43dd59e47af515fb

This is from the State of Florida website:
"For additional information about Florida labor law issues, you can contact the Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation's toll-free labor law helpline at 1-800-342-3450 1-800-342-3450."

Why does President Obama have a Connecticut Social Security Number?
Q. This is what we know so far. We get more info on Jean Paul Ludwig, who was born in 1890, had CT SSN obtained in 1976 and died in HI around 1981. There are 2 SS numbers for him and records show him dying in 2 different states: CA and HI around 1981.

The reason this is important, is because there is a similar fact pattern to Obama. Barack Obama is residing today in the White House, using CT SS number 042-68-4425, issued in CT in and around March 1977 to an elderly individual named John Paul Ludwig, who was born in 1890, who is presumed dead and whose death was either never reported to the SS administration or reported and deleted from the database by someone.

Obama's maternal grandmother Madelyn Dunham, worked as a part-timer or volunteer in the Probate Office in the Honolulu Hawaii Courthouse. Thus she would have access to the estate files of anyone who died there. Thus if the elderly man originally from CT died intestate in Hawaii with no known relatives, Grandma Dunham would have known this person is a prime candidate to steal the SSN of since there would be no known surviving family worrying about the death benefit from SSN and that the benefit was not likely applied for and thus SSA did not know he died. Thus the SSN remained active for the deceased person and Obama could "adopt" it as his own. This is a clear case of identity theft at the federal level.

This is what we know about Ludwig:

In 1924, Jean Paul Ludwig worked for Senator Reed of PA, in Washington DC.

On the ship manifest of Leviathan, he listed Senator Reed in Washington, DC as his empl., in answer to where he intended to live in the US.

Jean Paul Ludwig had been in the US for 3 yrs in 1924, but he was listed on the Immigration manifest and refered to as an alien in the column headings.

Listed under States Immigration Officer at Port of Arrival, New York, Aug 12, 1924:

Jean Paul Ludwig, Date of Arrival: Aug 12, 1924, Port of Departure:

Can you get GRILLZ in hawaii?
Q. heyy im going to waikiki and wantt to no if you can buy grillz therree?
and roughly how much they costt.
this is a pic if you dont know what they aree:
http://media.photobucket.com/image/grillz/pokorplayer/grillz.jpg?o=67

A. I haven't seen them displayed anywhere on Kalakaua Avenue (if it ain't there, it ain't anywhere in Waikiki), but that's not to say they're not available. Your best bet for finding them on the street is with one of the many jewelry vendors at the International Marketplace, 2330 Kalakaua Ave, across from the Outrigger Hotel.

An even better bet is to hit the Honolulu Yellow Pages on line and contacting a random Honolulu dentist about them.

I don't know why you'd want to get them in Waikiki (or Hawaii in general), unless you're hoping to find a tropical design. The cost of anything in Hawaii is going to be more expensive than just about anywhere else in the US, besides Alaska. So, your best bet is to check grillz out near where you live.

What is the best way to go about finding a dentist?

Q. I'm looking to have my teeth whitened and I need to know the best method of finding the best dentist for the job.

A. From co-workers and friends.

who is the best cosmetic dentist in philadelphia?
Q. I am looking to get veneers to close the slight gap between my top teeth. Who is the best cosmetic dentist for the job whose prices are reasonable?

A. I may have a couple good leads for you. Contact me at Mairzeedotes43@aol.com I am assuming Philadelphia, Pa.
I have found staff members do not give any information except to come in for a consultation or yes veneers are done here.

What to wear to a job interview?
Q. If its a dentist office job for a dental hygienist what would I wear. I know you shouldn't wear scrubs and I wouldn't wear a suit. I think thats too much.

A. I would wear business casual.....a nice blouse and dress pants or a blouse and skirt. Make sure the skirt isn't too short.

Do you think dentistry is unnecessarily academic?
Q. Do you think dentists are being over-trained academic side of things? I mean for general dentists, their job description isn't very vast, cavity filling, sealant application, etc. I mean, it doesn't 'feel' like an academic field, it's like if a butcher learnt the anatomy of an animal.

If you feel that its necessary for dentists to like all that academic work, do you think it's possible to be able to perform dentistry like a properly trained dentist with only practical education? (say if dentist shortages in war, poor countries, etc)

A. YOU ARE WRONG IN YOUR THINKING FOR THE FOLLOWING REASONS: A DENTIST IS A SPECIALIZED DOCTOR OF THE MOUTH. TO UNDERSTAND ALL THE FACTS IN DOING THIS PROFESSION A WIDE ARRAY OF EDUCATION IS REQUIRED.
ASK YOURSELF HOW MANY OF YOU FRIENDS ARE DENTISTS?
ANY TECHNICIAN MAY KNOW HOW TO DO A TASK, A DOCTOR KNOWS WHY. AND ALL THE KNOWING OF WHY TAKES MUCH TIME AND TRAINING.

Have you ever been embarrassed by the message a doctor or dentist office left?

Q. Have you ever been embarrassed by the message a doctor or dentist office left? Like if there's a party so nobody answers the phone so they leave a message on your answering machine that basically says "Yeah, this is the doctor's office and we're just checking to see how your yeast infection is doing!" and everyone hears it. Am I the only one who thinks doctors and dentists need to learn to use a little discrection?

A. I can't imagine any Doctor or nurse calling and leaving a message like that. First of all it's against the law ( HIPA) .

Who do i need to hire to work in a dentist office?
Q. I want to know who to hire to work in a dentist office.

A. secretary.
Hygienist
Dental assistants
receptionist
and a dentist
and a person the make to impression and other things like crowns

what happens to dental records when that dentist office closes?
Q. like i know to identify a body they go to the dentist. but what if the dentist office closes? what happens then?

A. I believe medical records have to be retained for a certain number of years before being shredded. I would hope you'll be to another dentist sometime within a year from you last visit, in which case you have nothing to worry about because your new dentist will take new x-rays/impressions.
If your dentist hasn't already closed the office, you can request a copy of your records to take with you to a new dentist.

How do I find out what dentist office in my area has the most hotties ?
Q. It seems dentists office are either all old people or packed full o' hotties. I was think about getting my teeth cleaned so I can try to pick one up and jack a set of those sweet double roach clips they use to hold your bib on.
Is there a special search engine I can use to see who is gonna have the lookers or even a best time of day to set up an appointment? Im younger if that helps you decide

A. I admire this question. I suggest this, have your friends help you. Split up into groups and go to each one. Dropping off some type of "literature". During this recon mission have them make notes of the hotness. Have a home base and a chart system. Rank them. This should be a good starting point. Good luck soldier.

How early do you take your child to the dentist?

Q. What's the appropriate age to take your child to the dentist? And how often? Is a yearly checkup enough?
Thanks.

A. I recommend that the child come see me as soon as he has four teeth. This visit is mainly to help mom understand how to take care of baby's teeth and catch any cavities when they are small.

I see mainly children in my practice and you would not believe how many teeth I have to extract from 2 and 3 year olds simply because nobody ever taught mom how to take care of her baby's teeth. By the time they come to my office at 2 or 3 years old it is often too late for me to save the teeth. Honestly, it makes me sad and a llittle sick every time I have to do that, but it's what has to be done.

What type of dentist should one go to if he wants to be out during dental surgery.?
Q. When I was a child my dentist pulled my tooth when it wasn't numb, for some strange reason I think thats going to happen again. So, now I would just rather be completely out.

A. An oral surgeon is trained, and has (should) an office equipped for using anesthesia. Let the dentist know that you want to be asleep. If you don't have one in mind, ask family, friends or coworkers for a recommendation. It is not a good idea to just choose a name out of the phone book. It will be ok!

What age did you first get your childs teeth cleaned at the dentist?Does the dentist have a special toothpaste?
Q. Does the dentist use a special toothpaste or something without fluoride in case the child swallows it?

I just basically need to know when I should take my child to the dentist - at what age. And how old was your child when they first went and how did they react?

A. 3.
If the child swallows some toothpaste during a cleaning, it's not the end of the world. The problem occurs if the child does it on a regular basis, or frequently snacks on toothpaste.
Most cities have fluoridated water that your child most likely swallows in some form or another on a more regular basis.

Really good cosmetic dentist in queens new york?
Q. I need to get root canal on my front teeth and I dont want to have any discoloration on my gum after the root canal. Can someone refer me to a really good cosmetic dentist in queens NY?

A. No discoloration happens to the gums when root canal is done; it is actually root canaled tooth that is discolored. All that your dentist has to ensure is that the subsequent porcelain crown is color matched with rest of your teeth.

Any good cosmetic dentists near Los angeles?
Q. I need a cosmetic dentist that can completely change my smile.
They can be in la, hollywood, pasadena, along that area. do they have a payment plan ?

A. None will give you payment plans for cosmetic work sorry

Can a cosmetic dentist change the length of my teeth?
Q. When I smile, barely any of my top teeth are visible. Braces will straighten the teeth (although they aren't really crooked), but would a cosmetic dentist actually be able to change the length of the teeth or whatever so that my more of my teeth actually show when I smile? I always smile with my mouth shut now and would like to be able to naturally smile like most everyone else. Also, since insurance doesn't cover cosmetic procedures, how much would something like that cost?

A. Yes, a qualified cosmetic dentist can lengthen your teeth. Even braces are capable of extruding teeth.

Go in for a consultation to an orthodontist and ask about the length of your teeth. The orthodontist may suggest a combination of braces and veneers or crown lengthening. Experienced orthodontists work with a network of other specialists who can work together to achieve the results you want.

Don't forget that "cosmetic dentistry" is not a true recognized specialty by the American Dental Association - so just about any dentist can call themselves a "cosmetic" dentist. Check around, ask your general dentist or get references.

Does anyone know any Dental Office that does teeth implant?

Q. It must be in San Francisco, because I live there. So if there anyone who live there and know the dental office that does teeth implant, please give me the address of the dental office.
Thanks.

A. The dental specialty that deals with implants is called prosthodontics. There are tons of dentists in San Francisco who have that as a specialization, including the ones on the list below.

http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&source=hp&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=dental+implants+san+francisco&fb=1&gl=us&hq=dental+implants&hnear=san+francisco&view=text&ei=rVw2S8PYK47JlAeg9uCoBw&sa=X&oi=local_group&ct=more-results&resnum=1&ved=0CCkQtQMwAA

However, many implants are now almost a routine part of dentistry, so many general dentists have been trained in the procedure and offer it to their patients. You can find a prosthodontist from the list, or you can just find a good general dentist, which everyone needs anyway. Then, your dentist will either do the implant himself or he will know a good specialist where he will refer you.

Good luck, and I hope this helps.

Would a degree from San Francisco be accepted in the UK?
Q. I am interested in doing a Dentist degree at UCSF, but am concerned I would not be able to practice in England when I graduate.
Anybody know if I would, in fact, be able to?

A. I think England accepts the ssame credits as the US.

Hi, I have some questions because i'm planning on being a dentist when I grow up.?
Q. Hi, I have some questions because i'm planning on being a dentist when I grow up.?
I'm planning on going to USF (university of San Francisco) in a couple years to persue a dentist career, and I just want to know the different types of dentists, how much money they make, and total years of school. Thank you so much!

And is it possible to finish the 2 years at community college in one year so I can go to usf faster?

A. You mean UCSF (University of CA at San Francisco). USF is the University of San Francisco and they do not have a dental school. It's a four year Jesuit university.

UCSF is one of the toughest dental schools to get into. You will not get close to getting in without four years of undergraduate college education with a 4.0 GPA. The competition to get into UCSF is fierce! Good luck to you and study hard if that's your goal. Most dental schools require a minimum of 3 years of college. However, this is a minimum so don't expect to get in without a BA degree. When I was in dental school, only one student had 3 years of college; everyone else had a bachelor's degree.

Dental school is 4 years and when you graduate you can go right into private practice if you have the confidence to do so. Those who don't go on to internships for another 2 years.

Specialties include periodontology (gum specialists), oral surgery, endodontics (root canal specialists), orthodontics, prosthodontics (crowns, bridges, etc). Keep in mind that when you specialize you will not be able to do any dental procedure outside of your specialty.

Dentistry is one of the most lucrative professions because it is possible to make a lot of money right after you graduate (if you're good).

I am foreign dentist how do I get a job in san francisco?
Q. I am graduate of dentistry in manila. how can I look for work here in san francisco?

A. For someone from another country to come and work in the US you need to obtain a work permit, unless you're already a resident (Green Card Holder) or a US Citizen.

To obtain a work permit you must have advanced qualifications (like a BA or higher) and must already have a job offered to you. Meaning that it is up to the company that is hiring you to prove that they need you here and cannot find someone already qualified to work in the US to do that job.

I don't know what the demand for dentistry is, but I would check web sites listed below and see whether there are any jobs offered in your field. If there is you can apply and if they are willing to hire you then they would have to submit paperwork to the US immigration department to request a work permit for you.

I know this sounds complicated but it can be done and is done often, specially if you have good qualifications, which it sounds like you do.

Why do people think that only rich people can live in New York City?

Q. LMFAO, that's NOT true. I'm no where near rich, and I live in a very clean quiet neighborhood in Brooklyn that has everything in my neighborhood. Like in my street there is a Doctor's office, dentist office, CVS, pizza store, salon, Russian Restaurants. Oh, and I'm only thirty minutes away from Times Square by train/subway. This is all in one block. On top of that I'm only 21, so I'm definitely NOT rich.

Where do people get this idea?

A. The cost of living is higher in New York City. Everything costs more, but salaries are also higher.

So if someone's living the same life as you in, say, Denver, and they move next door to you, the amount of money they're making won't allow them to have the lifestyle they're used to.

What place is better to move to Colorado Springs or live close to Denver(main City)?
Q. I need some help with this. I am a dental assistant but I am working to become a detal Hygiene. I want to move to CO soon but I am not sure if I can get a job there. I can deal with any kind of jobs as long as they are available. How is the life in Colorado Springs? Is it better to live in Denver main city or Colorado Springs. Is there an airport in Colorado springs, PLEASE Help!!

A. Denver has become very crowded and is not the nice city it once was. I would go with CS as it is smaller yet still large enough to find work. The line of work you are in is in great demand. I have a friend that has done it for years. She started with a temp service that would put her with different doctors. She eventually found an office she really enjoyed and got a permanent position there. Maybe you can find a similar temp service in CS and get paid while you look for a full time Dentist's office.

What's the best Dental university/school in the NE of USA?
Q. I want to be a dentist or a dental hygienist. I want to go to a college where people say "Wow... there?". Is there any colleges famous for dentistry?
I'm currently in high school and know sure that I want to do something in the dental industry. What activites/classes should i take to prepare for this? I've decided in taking chemistry and biology since it's the only classes I can link to it.

A. i think these are good:)

jobs for teens that are 14 years old.?

Q. im 14 and im looking for a job for after school and the weekends. what are some places that hire 14 year olds. if it helps i live in Beaverton, OR please help me =] thanks!

A. Normally, you will need permits as a minor to work in commercial businesses.

For young teenagers, it's not a bad idea to start out small. Since you are a girl, perhaps you can try babysitting for a neighbor. That's a common job, and you should get a decent experience out of it.

You can also ask family friends if you can help them out in their work place - perhaps a dentist or doctor's office. It should give you a more professional level of work, even if you are just xeroxing papers or filing them.

Go to your school counselor and ask for advise. They can usually give good recommendations on what you can do - perhaps working at school.

Where to live in Portland, OR?
Q. I plan to move to Portland, OR from the east coast and I'm wondering what's the best place to live in the city. I am 25, single, female, entry-level income.
I do have a job. I'd be transferring there for my company. Our office is downtown by the river.

A. Near 21st & West Burnside. I lived in that area for over 20 years. You don't need a car, you can walk wherever you need to go. Although it's downtown you can walk to five different grocery stores (Fred Meyer, Zupans, Trader Joe's, and two different Safeways.) Doctors, dentists, movie theaters, clothing stores, bars, salons, everything is an easy walk.

The nearest light rail station is at Jeld Wen Field about five blocks from 21st & Burnside; the light rail will take you to the airport, Gresham, Beaverton, Clackamas for $2.50. Ideally you either want to live within walking distance of where you work, or at least be able to get to work on the light rail. Not having to own a car saves you a ton of money.

What Broadway song should I do for the workshop?
Q. OK, so I'm teaching a musical theater workshop in a couple weeks and I'm looking for a great song from a Broadway show to teach. It needs to be a group song. If it has some easy harmonies that would be a plus too, because we only have a couple hours to teach the kids the song. It also needs a definite guy and girl part so we could split the kids into groups and teach their parts separately. Thank you!

Q. I am a baritone, and I have an assignment to find a song that you would audition with if the play you were auditioning for was Jekyll and Hyde. I found Les Miserables and The Phantom of the Opera, but I've already auditioned using "Who Am I?" for my High School directors. Any suggestions?

48 hours with no sleep before going to the dentist?

Q. Hello!

I have a Dental-phobia(a serious one) and i wondered if not sleeping for 48 hours or so will get me to sleep at the dentist?

Or at least lose my time perception or fear sensation?

Thanks ahead!

A. You're more likely to crash into a bus on the way *to* the dentist.

That said, try running this idea by the dentist or his hygienist. Some are more than willing to provide a short-acting benzo to help with agitation and anxiety.

How much does it cost to be put to sleep at the dentist?
Q. I need to have two wisdoms pulled one is impacted the other is not. If I have medicade they won't cover being put to sleep rite? I live here in Michigan where an extraction can be 99.00 dollars and up if you pay cash.

A. If you want to be put under General anesthesia for your extraction, most likely you will have to go to Oral Surgeon. Usually 4 wisdom teeth extraction and G.A. cost $1500 (doesn't matter they are impacted or not). If you don't have that much budget then you have 2 options left:

1) Get them taken out under Local anesthesia ( without putting you to sleep). or

2)Get Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to relieve anxiety and then get your teeth pulled. This option is comparatively cheaper . Nitrous cost about $55 and if you are lucky medicade might even cover it.!

How can I overcome my fear of the dentist?
Q. I have a dentist appointment in the morning, and am so scared that I know I will be up all night just thinking about it.
This happens every time I need to go to the dentist and I don't know what to do about it. Please no rude answers-- this is a real question/concern that is really impacting my life.

A. I feel your pain. Really there's not much you can do about the night before... make sure you're good and tired, maybe take a sleeping pill. work on relaxation techniques, or distract yourself with TV or a movie until you can fall asleep. And I always book an AM appointment so I don't have to try to eat beforehand and worst case, can just go home and take a nap afterwards.

If you're anxious In the actual chair it has helped me to wear a ring on my finger I can concentrate on playing with while the hygienist is doing their thing. And try to avoid any of the sickly sweet types of fluoride... stick to mint! And try to remember you get through one visit you don't have to go back for another whole year :)

Is sleep apnea a condition your born with or can u develop it?
Q. I used to sleep through the night without waking up most of the time. Now I wake up maybe 3 or 4 times a night. I never get restful sleep. I also experience a lot of sleep paralysis. Could this be linked to sleep apnea?

A. What Is Sleep Apnea? Are you feeling sleepy all the time? Do you snore? Is your doctor having a difficult time treating your high blood pressure? If you answered 'yes' to any of these questions, then you might have Sleep Apnea (also called Obstructive Sleep Apnea or OSA).

Sleep Apnea is a condition involving pauses or decreases in breathing during sleep. It is usually due to airway collapse. This collapse occurs in the nose and/or the throat - anywhere from where air enters the nostrils to the back of the tongue. Imagine a straw collapsing when trying to suck on a thick milkshake. Frequently, this airway collapsibility problem is inherited and starts in childhood. In the daytime, it is not a problem because there is good muscle-tone in the airway and the brain monitors breathing. But at night, the throat muscles become relaxed and the brain is not as attentive to the airway. So on inhalation, the airway walls can either completely collapse or significantly narrow. This is a problem because 1) the body must struggle to breathe and 2) the brain has to 'wake up' to reopen the airway.

These frequent awakenings lead to fragmentation of nighttime sleep. You may not remember them because they are so short. In fact, patients with sleep apnea can wake-up more than 30 times an hour and think that they slept uninterrupted through the night. Since sleep must be continuous and consolidated in order to be restorative, a number of cognitive problems can occur with sleep fragmentation: daytime sleepiness, memory problems, concentration difficulties, emotional instability, irritability, slowed reaction time, and most importantly, an increased risk of motor vehicle accidents.

There are also cardiovascular consequences of this constant 'struggling to breathe.' This puts a strain on the heart and blood vessels, leading to increased risk of high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.

Finally, there are social implications to Sleep Apnea. The snoring associated with sleep apnea can disrupt the sleep of others. In fact, one study showed that when a person treats his/her sleep apnea, the sleep partner gets the equivalent of one hour more sleep per night.

Sleep apnea is a progressive disease and often gets worse with age. Weight gain, alcohol, and other sedating/relaxing substances exacerbate it.

Who Gets Sleep Apnea?

A common misconception is that only overweight men that snore loudly have sleep apnea, but the facts are:

1) Sleep apnea can occur without snoring
2) Thin people can have sleep apnea
3) Women can have sleep apnea
4) Children can have sleep apnea

In other words, anyone can have it. Even skinny women. Even children.

I Think I Might Have Sleep Apnea, How Do I Find Out If I Have It?

Make an appointment with your primary care physician, or if your insurance allows it, go straight to a sleep specialist. If your physician thinks you might have sleep apnea, then he/she can refer you for a sleep study or comprehensive sleep evaluation.

How Is Sleep Apnea Treated?

There are four main categories of treatment for sleep apnea: Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), Surgery, Oral Appliances, and Behavioral Modification.

The most effective way to treat sleep apnea is with CPAP. CPAP is a mask worn over the nose attached by a hose to an air compressor. The air compressor gently and quietly blows room-air into the nose, which 'stents' the airway open, preventing airway collapse. This is the most effective way to treat sleep apnea, and all patients diagnosed with sleep apnea should at least try it before considering other options.

Surgery can be an effective way to treat sleep apnea. A number of different procedures can be performed. These range from nasal septum repair to jaw reconstruction. Talk to your doctor about whether surgery is the right option for you.

An oral appliance is a device made by a dentist or an orthodontist designed to pull your lower jaw forward. By pulling your lower jaw forward, the tongue is pulled away from the back of the throat. If your airway obstruction is occurring behind the tongue, then this can be an effective way to treat your sleep apnea. The treatment of sleep apnea with oral appliance should be a coordinated effort between the sleep physician, the dentist/orthodontist, and the patient.

Behavioral modifications can help in the treatment of sleep apnea, but are usually the least effective. These include such techniques as weight loss, sleeping on your side, and avoiding alcohol before bedtime.

None of these treatment options is ideal, but they all can be useful in treating sleep apnea and resulting in more restful sleep. With risks like heart attack and stroke, you should do everything you can to get your sleep apnea under control. If you think you have sleep apnea, contact your doctor or go to a sleep center. It could be the best decision you ever made.

Any one here a dentist, or know anything about dentists?

Q. This really doesn't have to do with people but about my dog. My dog has a chipped tooth and need a root canal. There is no dog dentist any where near me. Closest ones hours away. I heard somthing about people dentists working with vet clinics to do dogs teeth. Is this true? Where would I find out if any one in my area does something about like that?

A. ask your vet about the best thing for your dog, most vets would do this for your dog anyway, its pretty standard. good luck. hope your doggy feels better!

How much does it cost to replace a dogs upper front teeth?
Q. I took my dog to the dentist a week ago to clean his teeth and he ended up removing 22 teeth including his upper-front molars. He is having a hard time eating regular food and looks ugly because the teeth are missing. How much would it cost to replace the two teeth and were do i have to go to do it?

A. Once the teeth are taken out, you cannot replace them. If he had 22 teeth removed, he won't be able to chew dry food, so you will have to start feeding him wet food.

How is a dogs mouth cleaner than a humans?
Q. People brush their teeth, floss, use mouth wash, and go to the dentist. Dogs lick their butts, eat leftover dead things in the lawn and snack out of the litter box. I'm not seeing it. Dogs breath smells awful too. So someone explain to me how dogs mouths are cleaner than a persons?

A. It is a myth that dogs mouths are cleaner. Peoples mouths are actually cleaner (although I guess it depends on the person :P

The thing is that most diseases or illnesses a dog can have do are not transferable to humans while humans obviously transfer illness to one another. While a dogs mouth is dirtier, it may be less dangerous to humans.

Has your dog ever had to have dental surgery?
Q. My dachshund has a fractured molar and my regular vet sent me to a veterinary dentist. I knew going to a specialist would be expensive, but I wasn't prepared for this! Just the initial visit cost $120 and when I got the estimate for the procedure, I almost fell off my chair! More than $1300!!!! Just to pull a tooth. Of course that includes anesthesia, antibiotics and pain killers, but still! She's worth every cent I have to spend to keep her healthy, but this is going to be tough.

So has your dog (or cat) ever had to have dental surgery, or any other type of expensive procedure? How much did it cost?

BTW, don't let your dog chew on any hard toys! Those hard plastic Nylabones are a no-no and my dog loves them. The dentist told me a chew toy should pass the 3 following criteria:
1. Soft enough to make an indentation with your thumbnail.
2. At least a little flexible.
3. If it is hard enough to hurt you if you bang it on your knee, it's too hard for the dog to chew on.

A. Why can't your vet just pull the tooth? It should be under two hundred dollars for everything including extraction. Is it broken below the gumline?
I think you are getting "took".

Can a General dentist treat gum decease?

Q. My friend has periodontists, which is infection of the gums. His insurance does not cover specialist (periodontics in this case). Can a general dentist treat his problem?

A. General dentists can practice periodontics and treat gum disease. Depending on how difficult the case is, the general dentist should refer the patient to a specialist, a periodontist.

Should I go to a general dentist first or cosmetic dentist?
Q. I have an appointment for a general dentist in a week or so I'm wondering if some things are needed that a normal dentist can't do will they refer you to another type of dentist? Say if I needed dental implant(s)

A. You are perfectly fine to see a general dentist. There are no differences between someone who claims to be a cosmetic dentist from a general dentist. The only difference is skill/artistic ability, additional training (which may or may not make one dentist cosmetically better than another) and the dentist desire to do cosmetic dentistry.

Don't be fooled by someone who has a bunch of letters that act as credentials behind their title. They can be completely meaningless. "D.D.S. or D.M.D" are the only real ones that count. Go with your gut about how you feel during your visit, the perceived level of confidence your dentist has and one other VERY important thing: See if anyone you know recommends the person or if that dentist has patients of his who would be willing to talk to you about their experience and see pictures of that dentist's cosmetic work.

Be sure to verify that they are pictures of his/her work and not pictures of random people.

Today, most dentists are capable of doing most/all cosmetic and non-cosmetic procedures. However, there are also limitations and knowing those limitations is a good sign. If you go to a dentist who never refers you to any other dentist for anything...that would make me a little nervous. It is very difficult to find a dentist who is GREAT at ALL things...it's just not human nature. Most are GREAT at many things and just okay at other procedures. The importance comes in the honesty of the dentist to do what is best for the patient and not for his/her finances.

Hope that helps!

Can a dental specialist (for example orthodontic) open a practice and work as a general dentist?
Q. Lets just say a dentist worked as a general dentist for 3 years and than went to dental school again to study a speciality. Can he open a practice and work as a general dentist and as a specialist in his own practice?

A. Yes. His dental license allows him to practice any phase of dentistry that he is properly trained for. But, if he started doing a bunch of general dental procedures, many local dentists might choose not to send him any patients and he would have to build his specialty practice on his own.

I had a new periodontist do this to me. When I noticed that I was not getting my patients back from him for their routine care, I contacted him to see what was going on. He said, "I've got to build my practice, too, you know." I said, "Not by stealing my patients, you don't," and never sent him any more patients.

are you suppose to have an general dentist when you have braces?
Q. i have braces and an orthodontist obviously

but am i suppose to have a general dentist?

(im not sure if im suppose to because how are the general dentist gonna clean my teeth and stuff with my braces on)

can they take off my braces when their cleaning it or something?

A. It is strongly recommended to have a general dentist while you are undergoing orthodontic treatment. It is very important to have your teeth cleaned regularly by the general dentist to prevent those white spots from developing on your teeth while in braces. The general dentist will also look for any cavities. Your wires and attachments (except rubber bands) will remain intact while your teeth are being cleaned. The only time wires are removed when cleaning is when the general dentist is also doing your orthodontics.

does anyone know how I would find a good dentist that is fairly inexpensive in my area?

Q. I have always had dental insurance until now, and I need to watch the prices carefully. Is there a website or something to use to find the cheapest dentist that is still good?

A. If you have a dental school in your area, Thats what I would suggest. They have great quality control and low prices, but they also take a long time to do stuff. So unless you don't have alot of free time in the daytime, the best way to find a good dentist is still through friends and family.

What's the cheapest way to get dental care?
